Finding New Market Tax Credit
Eligible Census Tracts

The first step is to go to the census bureau search page by clicking on this link: Census Bureau Search.

Census Web Site

Enter the address of the location and click on the GO button. This will take you to a Census Information page for that location.

Census Information

Look up the number under "Census Tract".

(If you don't have Microsoft Excel compatible spreadsheet software installed you will need to install the free Microsoft Excel Viewer to complete the next step.)

Now view the MMF supplied Excel table. This will display an Excel spreadsheet table containing all of the census tracts in Michigan.

Excel Table

We colored all of the eligible sites in yellow and all of the non-eligible sites gray. If your track number is highlighted in yellow it is eligable and you can proceed with the pre-application process.

Excel Table 2

To make it easier to look-up your Census Tract number click on the arrow in the MSA NAME heading and go to the appropriate MSA. Selecting one will narrow the list to just those contained in the selected area. In our example above it is "Grand Rapids -- Muskegon -- Holland MSA". When clicked this will narrow the list to only Grand Rapids MSA properties.

Excel Table 3

Next go to the Census Tract column and look for the number of the Census Tract. Click on it with your mouse.

Final Table

As you can see from our example, Census Tract 21 in Grand Rapids is an eligible New Market Tax Credit Census Tract (otherwise known as a Qualified Low Income Community (QLIC). If it was a gray line, it would not be eligible.
